Jim Thorpe water quality is improving

Water quality may be improving in a previously troubled section of Jim Thorpe Borough.

At the March council meeting, family members of Center Street residents said they had been dealing with dirty water for over two years.Borough engineer Kim Mazur detailed Thursday night the steps he took to address the problem.A few days after the meeting, he checked a hydrant in the area, which flowed clear after a few seconds, and spoke to other residents, all who said they weren't having problems."I went to the house in question to look at the filter, run the water for a while and test for chlorine," Mazur said. "I flowed the faucet and there was dirty water coming out. The only thing I could think of is that there was buildup of debris between the filter and the service line."Mazur opened up every line in the house and let the water run for 30 minutes."We basically simulated a flush of the entire house, trying to create velocity and flush the dirt out" he said. The results left the homeowners "pretty happy," he said."They said they've never seen the water so clean."Mazur returned to the residence closer to Thursday's meeting and said the water was still clean and the filter looked good as well. Previously, the residents said the filter was dirty 30 minutes after it was changed. For any residents in the area experiencing a dirty water issue, Mazur recommended a full house line flush without a filter.Count Councilman John McGuire among those who will give it a try."I've been changing my filter every two weeks," he said. "It gets to the point where I have stuff breaking through the filter. I'm glad it worked for the other residents though. They had water that was even worse than mine."Going forward, Mazur said he would continue to monitor the issue, but is hopeful there will not be future problems."There doesn't appear to be any issues with the distribution system," he said.
