Woman who appeared in court with drugs in system pleads again

A Carbon County woman who appeared in the county court in March with illegal drugs in her system and was jailed made another court appearance to enter another guilty plea on Thursday.

Melissa Lynn Atkinson, 26, of Albrightsville, appeared before Judge Joseph J. Matika to plead to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on the charge on Aug. 14, 2014, along Route 534 by state police at Fern Ridge following a traffic stop in Kidder Township.On March 10 Atkinson appeared before Matika to plead to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia for an incident on July 19, 2014. However, at the proceeding Matika asked her if she had taken any drugs, illegal or not. Matika told her he observed her in the courtroom and that she couldn't keep her eyes open and appeared under the influence. She at first denied taking any kind of drugs, but after the adult probation office conducted a urine test on Matika's orders, the result was positive for various drugs in her system, including heroin and meth. She then admitted to using illegal drugs.Matika then sentenced her to serve 30 days in jail on the charge. He also revoked a weekend sentence of 30 days she was serving on a prior driving under the influence charge. She was immediately taken to the county prison.On Thursday Atkinson appeared in a prison jumpsuit and said she has 17 more days to serve on the prior sentences imposed by the court.She also said she was getting drug counseling at the prison and planned to enter an outpatient program when paroled.Matika placed her on probation for the latest charge for a year, consecutive to the other sentences. She was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow all recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee, and render 50 hours of community service when released on parole.
