Man who lied about ID wanted by police

Lansford police are looking for a man they believe stole a registration plate and lied to authorities about his identity.

Joshua E. Berko, 26, of Summit Hill, was charged on March 25 by patrolman Jason Helmer with unsworn falsification to authorities, receiving stolen property, false identification to law enforcement officer, fraudulent use/removal of a plate, and displaying a plate card on an improper vehicle. The charges stem from a March 15 incident. According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Helmer with District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, here's what happened:At 6:10 a.m. March 15, Helmer was on patrol and driving in the 200 block of East Bertsch Street when he saw an unoccupied white Cadillac sedan parked in front of 217 E. Bertsch St.The car had heavy driver's side damage.Helmer didn't recognize the car and ran a check on the registration plate. The search found the plate was reported by Philadelphia police as having been stolen. It was inactive and last registered to a John Stinger Jr. of Philadelphia.Helmer seized the plate and impounded the car.At 8:40 a.m., patrolman Shawn Nunemacher spoke with a man who identified himself as John Seltner, and who was calling to report that his car had been stolen.Nunemacher said the car had been towed. The man came to the police station, and again identified himself as Seltner. He told Nunemacher he didn't have identification with him. he gave his birth date as Sept. 4, 1988, and his address as 217 E. Bertsch St.He waived his Miranda warnings and gave a statement to police. He said he bought the car on March 14 from a man named Kevin in Philadelphia. He said "Kevin" had given him an old registration to use temporarily, and said he used it so he could legally park on the street while waiting for his car title to arrive.Police contacted the seller, Stinger, who told them that he had taken the registration plate off the car, which he had sold to John Seltner, and placed it on a dryer in his house. He later found the plate missing, and reported the theft to Philadelphia police.Police found that "Seltner" was really Berko, and that he has an outstanding arrest warrant from Philadelphia and several local warrants written by district judges.
