Toy gun causes Thorpe scare

L.B. Morris School in Jim Thorpe went into what district officials called a "semi-lockdown" Wednesday afternoon after it was reported a student was carrying a weapon.

"After a complete investigation, we are happy to report that the item recovered was a toy and secured by the building administration," Superintendent Brian Gasper said in an announcement to parents.Jim Thorpe Borough police responded to the building and Chief Joe Schatz confirmed the item in question was in fact a plastic toy gun."It was in the bag of a fifth-grade student," Schatz said.Gasper said the district acted swiftly after getting the report."The building administration received word that there was the possibility that a student was in possession of a gun in school," he said. "Immediately, the building was placed in a restricted movement lockdown and the authorities were called. Once the building was secure, it was restored to a regular schedule."Schatz said although the gun was a toy, an investigation will remain open."We'll have to determine whether the item meets the definition of a weapon on school property," he said.
