Dinner benefits shooting victim Lansford Fire Company raises funds for woman left paralyzed

Sunday morning it was snowing, roads were slippery and the winter weather that has beaten down all of us showed no signs of letting up.

Despite the weather, a benefit spaghetti dinner for a Lansford woman left paralyzed in a shooting incident went on at the American Fire Company in Lansford. Over 175 dinners were sold by fire company members to raise funds for Lansford resident Kimberly Kokinda. On Jan. 4, Kokinda was driving a car along a road in West Penn Township. West Penn Chief of Police Brian Johnson reported her boyfriend, Raymond Meyers of Lehighton, was in the rear seat with a .22-caliber rifle. Somehow, Meyers fired the rifle and struck Kokinda in the back, leaving her paralyzed. She was flown by medical helicopter to a Lehigh Valley facility. So far no charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation. Kokinda was present with family members, including her three sons, at the spaghetti dinner. She was in good spirits and said, "I will fight through this for my sons."She said she was stunned to see such a good turnout of people for the spaghetti dinner and accompanying bake sale on her behalf. She's presently undergoing extensive therapy and has undergone several operations.
