Oscar spread the wealth

Oscar spread the largesse at the 87th Academy Awards last Sunday.

Thematically, Oscar again typically voted for disease ("The Theory Of Everything," "Still Alice") and dysfunction ("Birdman," "Whiplash," "Boyhood").The big categories went to "Birdman," which received four gold statues for Picture, Director (Alejandro Inarritu), Original Screenplay (Inarritu, Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Armando Bo) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki, a two-year in a row recipient, following "Gravity" in 2014).The next biggest recipient in number with four Oscars was "The Grand Budapest Hotel," but not in major categories: Score (eight nominations was the charm for Alexandre Desplat), Production Design, Costume and Makeup-Hairstyling.Next in numbers was "Whiplash," with three Oscars: Supporting Actor (J.K. Simmons, a favorite), Editing and Sound Mixing.Oscar's blockbuster nominee, "American Sniper," only received one Oscar: Sound Editing."The Theory Of Everything" received one Oscar, but it was a big one: Actor (Eddie Redmayne), in an upset since Michael Keaton was the favorite."Still Alice" received one Oscar and it was also major: Actress (Julianne Moore, a five-time nominee and the favorite)."Boyhood" also left with one Oscar: Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette, the presumptive recipient).Oscar voters somewhat redeemed the so-called "Selma" snub, with the Song Oscar ("Glory," John Legend and Common)."The Imitation Game" went away with one Oscar: Adapted Screenplay (Graham Moore)."Interstellar" rightfully received the Visual Effects Oscar."Citizenfour," about Edward Snowden, received the Documentary Feature Oscar."Ida" received the Foreign Language Oscar."Big Hero 6" received the Animated Feature Oscar in a category that was a tossup since many thought "The Lego Movie" should have been nominated.Perhaps as a consolation, "Everything Is Awesome," the Oscar-nominated song from "The Lego Movie," was a production number in the telecast.Oscars show host Neil Patrick Harris was off his game, resorting to bodily function jokes, a tighty-whities stunt, and embarrassing time-wasters: audience banter involving seat fillers, needless hectoring of Octavia Spencer and his own Oscar predictions (or so we were to believe). As for my picks, I guessed four out of seven, missing the big choicesfor Picture, Director and Actor.
