Eighth-graders prepare for academic competition

During the early exploitation on Honduras by the Spanish, what metallic element was most important?

Oh, silver, of course.In what country is the annual Adelaide Festival of Arts held?You knew that one: Australia.Are you smarter than an eighth-grader? These are just a couple examples of the types of questions that area eighth-grade students will be fielding during an annual ACE competition, held at 8:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday at Northwestern Lehigh Middle School in New Tripoli. Students from Tamaqua, Jim Thorpe, Northwestern Lehigh, Lehighton, Panther Valley, Palmerton, Northern Lehigh and Catasaqua will compete for those two days, with the top three teams advancing to the finals at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25.In addition, the top 10 highest-scoring students will then compete in a few practice rounds of questions until the top six are chosen."The topics for competition usually include math, language arts, history, geography and science," said Jen Disante, the Tamaqua teacher who heads the school's group of students, Morgan Lusch, Justin Weiksner, Tommy Hosler, Danny Chinchar, Olivia Lattanzi and Emily Barrett."Students have been preparing with practices during and after school; we usually quiz the students with example questions."Disante and Tamaqua teacher Alisa Kemmerer have been working with the students. Kemmerer will be a moderator for the ACE competition.
