Walnutport snow removal complaints heard
There were various items on the agenda for Thursday's Walnutport Borough Council meeting.
Mayor Wayne Weidner was acknowledged for his longtime commitment and effort to the borough. He was presented a plaque for his service with the Walnutport Playground Association by tax collector Bob Treskot.Residents of borough have made numerous complaints about problems concerning snow removal this winter. Specifically, there were gripes in respect to stones being transported with the snow when the Public Works Department plows and readies the road for travel. Some have reported that these stones have accumulated into large snow banks on residents' properties, which can cause issues after the snow has melted. For example, these stones become dangerous projectiles in springtime when residents tend to their lawns. This was specifically a noted on a stretch of Green Street, behind the Walnutport McDonald's. Here, an errant dumpster is to blame, which does not allow the borough workers the proper room to operate their snow removal machinery. Council said they will attempt to move the dumpster to appease the residents while continuing to make the roads in the borough safe for travel during and after winter weather.Furthermore, residents of the borough have complained extensively about the trash collecting in Walnutport.Again, winter weather seems to be to blame, as residents of Railroad and Cherry streets have been completely passed over for garbage pickup on occasions.Outside contractor Advanced Disposal takes care of the trash hauling for the borough.Other problems with the hauling company have included residents reporting them throwing recycling in with the garbage and the contractor not following through with complaints.Council discussed solutions to the garbage problems, including searching for other contractors and collecting trash and recyclables on different days.
