Snow and ice, we've got.
But bird seed and suet are flying off the shelves of local hardware stores, and rock salt is vanishing faster than ice in August. The steady barrage of weekend snow and ice storms are taking a toll on supplies at local hardware stores.Stores are scrambling to keep the winter needs in stock."We had a shipment of nine tons of rock salt a week and a half ago, and we were already sold out as of yesterday," said April Henry, who is assistant manager of the Tractor Supply in Mahoning Township. The store expects a new shipment soon, she said.As for supplies for our fine feathered friends, Henry said the blends of bird seed are sold out, but the high quality black oil sunflower seed, which has the high fat content birds need for cold weather, is "holding strong."The suet shelves are bare, but another shipment is due Wednesday."We're going through that pretty fast," she said.At Marzen's Hardware in Jim Thorpe, supplies of everything winter are moving fast, but the store has been able to keep up, said owner Joe Marzen."Bird seed and suet is OK so far. We had a good supply," he said. "The rock salt and ice melt had sold out, but we got a supply in today."In Tamaqua, M&S Hardware store assistant manager Shirley Frantz said shelves are stocked."We just got a couple of pallets of rock salt and ice melt. We do have bird seed. We just got supplies in this morning. Yesterday, we were just about sold out of ice melt," she said."We have pretty much bird food and a variety of suet. We also have 50- and 25-pound sacks of rock salt, so we're pretty good yet," said Pat Swartz, the assistant manager of Panther Valley Lumber in Lansford. But the supplies are going fast."Some customers have said we're the third store they had to go to for rock salt," she said.
