Monroe men charged after chase

Authorities say a Saylorsburg man faces serious charges after he led police on a high-speed chase that crossed county lines while he snorted heroin.

Blake A. Stires, 28, faces charges of driving under the influence, reckless endangerment, fleeing police, flight to avoid apprehension, reckless driving and driving without a license.A passenger in his car, Timothy Lee, 40, of Tobyhanna, who was wanted for dealing heroin, was also arrested.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Brian Webbe of Monroe County, here's what happened:On Thursday, Webbe and other detectives and officers from the Monroe County District Attorney's Office and Stroud Area Regional Police Department were helping catch Lee, who was wanted on a felony arrest warrant for trafficking a large amount of heroin into Monroe County in October. At 4:50 p.m., Lee was spotted in the passenger seat of a car in the parking lot of a pizza place at the intersection of Route 611 and Broad Street in Delaware Water Gap.Stires was in the driver's seat. When police tried to get the man who was wanted on the warrant, Stires pulled out, almost hitting Webbe and his vehicle. Stires drove south on Route 611, pursued by Webbe and the others, their lights flashing and sirens on.But Stires kept going, on through Delaware Water Gap, sometimes going up to 80 mph and crossing over into the oncoming lane.Stires at one point slowed down unexpectedly, causing the officer behind him to pass him, then speeding up to pass the officer, almost hitting the officer's car.Because Stires' actions endangered other drivers, the officer pulled over and let him pass.Stires continued on into Northampton County, where police from that county joined the pursuit.Stires was finally stopped at Route 512 in Bangor, after he drove over spikes placed by police. Police had to "box in" Stires, who still tried to drive away on the rims of his car until Webbe finally bumped his vehicle against the rear of Stires' car. Both Stires and Lee were arrested.During his arrest, Stires dropped several small plastic bags containing suspected heroin. Other similar bags could be seen in the car, including near the driver's seat. Stires appeared to be under the influence of heroin. He told Webbe he had snorted three bags of heroin during the pursuit.Stires also told Webbe he was on probation in Northampton County, which Webbe verified.A warrant had been issued on him for violating probation and drug laws. Also, his license had been suspended.Lee was jailed in the Monroe County Correctional Facility on the original warrant, and Stires was arraigned on multiple charges by District Judge Thomas Olsen. He was also jailed under $75,000 bail. Additional drug-related charges are pending against both men.
