More rain on the way

By CHRIS PARKER

cparker@tnonline.comThe animals aren't gathering two by two. Yet.With even more rain forecast for today, our region continues to to slog through this soggy summer. The National Weather Service forecasts an 80 percent chance of heavy rain today, and a 60 percent chance tonight. The drenching rains are putting a damper on outdoor activities, delaying baseball games, picnics and hikes. At Cornerstone Community Church in Kresgeville, Andrea Jacoby said the rainfall is making it tough to plan this week's Vacation Bible School activities."We're fairly limited in the room we have inside the church. We plan time outside. We definitely have to plan and do some rearranging if we have to bring the kids inside for games. We shuffle around and use our space as best we can," she said."We definitely do a lot of praying that we'll be able to continue outside games," Jacoby added.NWS meteorologist James Bunker said that despite the drenchings, our region's rainfall this month is slightly below average. The downpours bring a danger of flash flooding, so have alternate routes in mind when driving and remember to not cross flowing water even if it appears shallow.Last week's storms felled trees, cutting power to thousands of PPL customers. While high winds are not forecast for this week, older, weaker trees may be weakened by the constant soaking and be more prone to breaking.PPL spokesman Paul Wirth said the company's "preparation for storms like this does start well in advance with tree trimming. Our outages would have been much more severe had it not been for trimming so many trees over the past three or four years."Most outages, he said, are caused by trees falling on power lines.Another line of defense against power outages is PPL's Smart Grid system, which immediately senses power disruptions and automatically reroutes electricity to restore power within seconds. Wirth said Smart Grid has reduced outages by 38 percent and is being installed in this area.Wednesday's forecast calls for clearing skies, a sunny Thursday and Friday, then a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms on Saturday.
