Mahoning Township police want drivers to pay attention while passing work crews.

Their concern stems from an incident Wednesday in which a driver ignored "road closed" signs on Ashtown Drive and drove through hot asphalt, almost hitting a worker. The township road crew had to repair the damage quickly, before the asphalt hardened.Police cited six drivers for failing to obey the signs.Police Chief Audie Mertz listed the law and penalties.Drivers may not drive past, around or through a sign or traffic-control device closing a road or highway due to an existing or potentially hazardous condition, unless otherwise directed by an emergency service responder.Violators can be fined up to $250. If their actions result in the need for emergency services, the fine can go up to $500.The driver may also be liable for restitution for the cost of the emergency responders.
