Proposed tax increase in the works in Tamaqua

The proposed tax increase for property owners in the Tamaqua Area School District is still on the table.

During Tuesday's regular board meeting held at Tamaqua Area Middle School, members approved a preliminary budget that calls for about $37 a year more in school taxes for 2014-15 with some paying more and some less depending on property value.The board has until the June meeting to finalize the budget, according to Daniel Schoener, chairman, finance committee.The increase of 0.93 mill the value of a mill is $295,000 would generate $274,000 for the district.The average homestead assessed value in the district is $39,464.But the increase isn't yet carved in stone.The directors indicated an intent to further discuss the move at the next meeting.In other action, the Mountain Valley Golf Course was approved as the Tamaqua home team course.Hired as substitute custodians were Ann Jones, Kim Faust and Kelly McGlinchey, all of Tamaqua.Hired as adult game workers were Zane Bachert and Lisa Edmonds, New Ringgold; Donna Boyea, Andreas; and Alexa Jones, Catherine Seda and Olga Williams, all of Tamaqua.Also hired is Abigail Yusella, Summit Hill, summer custodian, and Teresa Harvey as custodian, June 9 and 10, unpaid days; and Christine D'Amato, Barnesville, substitute cafeteria worker.The board approved family and medical leave for custodian Michael Oakes to begin about June 25.Recovery tuition rates for the summer session will be $175 for high school and $125 for middle school.The district will have a beginning fund balance on July 1 of $5,029.505.Other taxes in the district include a $225 assessed occupation tax, along with a $5 EMS tax shared with municipalities, and a 1 percent earned income tax and one percent real estate transfer tax, both of which are share with municipalities, plus a Section 679 per capita tax of $5 and Act 511 per capita tax of $5.Real estate tax is 34.29 mills.The board also agreed to create an account for the Tamaqua Area Alumni Association and approved an application for a small games of chance license by the Tamaqua Area Booster Board.
