Power outages affect 1,168 in Schuylkill, Carbon counties

PPL Electric Utilities, Allentown, reported that 1,118 customers were without power in eastern Schuylkill County about 6:45 a.m. Friday, along with an additional 50 customers in Jim Thorpe.

Areas affected in Schuylkill County include Rush Township, West Penn Township, Walker Township, Coaldale, South Tamaqua and Tamaqua.Fire police were summoned about 7:20 a.m. for traffic control at the intersection of Routes 443 and 309 in South Tamaqua.Some locales, such as New England Valley and Rush Township, reported power restored to affected homes and businesses in about an hour.As of 9 a.m. Friday, PPL reported that outages in Jim Thorpe Borough had been reduced to 30.The cause for the power outage is unknown and PPL crews were addressing the situation at multiple locations.PPL's online outage center was reporting that the utility has been in a storm emergency since 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
