Palmerton Council grants extensions for subdivision land development

Extensions for a pair of subdivision land development plans in Palmerton have been granted.

On a 5-0 vote Thursday, council granted an extension, with no exceptions, to 555 Delaware Ave., until March 14.The property the former Bennett Palmerton dealership now houses a Dunkin' Donuts shop, and serves as a medical office for Blue Mountain Health System's new family practice physician, Dr. Syed Zia.The back end of the site has served as a Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit facility since 2010.Councilmen Jason Behler, Richard Nothstein, Kris Hoffner, Councilwoman Holly Sell, and council President Terry Costenbader were in favor.Councilmen Jeremy Barbosa and Michael Ballard were opposed.Borough manager Rodger Danielson noted that the occupancy permit was set to expire today, which is why he said a 60-day extension was requested. But, Nothstein said he had reservations with granting that long of an extension."We're more or less being jerked around," Nothstein said. "I think we're getting our leg pulled a little bit."Hoffner said he, too, was opposed to a 60-day extension.Costenbader took it one step further."I don't know what was done, and what wasn't done," Costenbader said."There's no way I'd even entertain another request for an extension (after the one that council approved)."Danielson noted that if the exception were not to be granted, the business would lose its occupancy permit.Sell added, "I like the idea of giving a short extension (for work that wasn't completed due to the weather), but these other things needed to be done, and they were not."Danielson added, "The things are really very intertwined. It's hard to separate the issue."Also on Thursday, council, on a 4-0 measure, with an abstention from Nothstein, agreed to grant Hunan House Chinese Restaurant, at 493 Delaware Ave., a 90-day extension for its land development plan.
