Although Nesquehoning borough workers were basically praised for their handling of snow storms this winter, the borough council said it plans to change its winter ordinance before next year.

One of the changes it anticipates making is having alternate side of the street parking during a snowstorm.The council met Wednesday in the borough hall and the various topics related to the recent snowstorms were discussed.Resident Sandy Gazdick said alternate side of the street parking shouldn't be for specific streets."I think we need it everywhere," she said.She complained about many residents not shoveling their sidewalks, saying that 36 hours after the biggest storm, there were 40 residents in one specific area who hadn't cleaned the pavements. Some of those individuals had shoveled snow from their driveways and cleaned a path to the road, but didn't clear the sidewalks.Council President David Hawk said council had sent letters to some residents who didn't shovel, and likely will fine residents next time."We will begin to enforce the ordinance," he said.Brian Steigerwalt of Railroad Street complained that the borough ordinance doesn't give a specific time for cars to be moved during a snowstorm.He said one morning he was warming his car to go to work at about 4 a.m. and while the car was idling he received a ticket."The borough has been inconsistent with enforcing the ordinance," agreed Hawk, noting that it intends to have more enforcement.In response to one complaint that a resident got a ticket for not moving his vehicle while other residents didn't, Councilman Michael Sniscak said at that time the police were pulled away from writing tickets for four hours for a disorderly conduct call.Joe Folk of East Garibaldi Street complained that a trailer hasn't been moved for a long time. Council members said this matter is being addressed. The same individual who has the trailer also has a truck parked along the street.One councilman remarked, "The truck is supposed to be moved every 48 hours. He moves it every 48 days."One woman said she visited every town in the area and Nesquehoning did the finest job in snow plowing and removal.
