Rest Haven to pay $557,927 owed to Schuylkill Co.

The Schuylkill County nursing home at Rest Haven will repay $557,927 it owes to the county's general fund in five installments.

Commissioners approved the plan, which wipes out Rest Haven's 2013 debt to the county, at a work session Wednesday.The nursing home will pay $111,685 a month, beginning March 5. The plan was recommended by Service Access Management, which manages Rest Haven, located behind the Penn State University campus in Schuylkill Haven.In other matters, commissioners declared Feb. 13 a disaster emergency. That's the day Mother Nature slammed the region with up to 19 inches of snow and ice, bringing traffic to a standstill, collapsing roofs and taxing the resources of towns as workers cleared snow from streets.The declaration enables the county to receive disaster relief money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.Also on Wednesday, commissioners opened the only bid received for trash removal for several county buildings. The bid, from Waste Management, Lancaster, was for a total of $133,794 for a three-year contract beginning in May.The contract would cover the court house, the prison, the human services building, Rest Haven, the adult probation building and the Mahanoy Senior Center.Commissioners will review the bid, and may consider it when they meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 26.Also, commissioners appointed five people to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund Board for the year beginning Feb. 24. They are Kenneth J. Huebner of Orwigsburg; Doug Naftzinger of Auburn; Ann Hoover Smith of Frackville; Randy Stump of Pine Grove, and Kay Williams of Pottsville.Treasurer Jackie McGovern announced that 2014 dog licenses are now available through her office or through PAdoglicense.com.
