Mounds of snow fueling cabin fever

Got cabin fever?

How about a case of the winter blues? If so, don't feel bad. You're far from alone. As we continue to trudge along through one of the harshest winters on record, it's important to keep our heads up, and hopefully, above the massive piles of snow that have accumulated on our front lawns.Food deliveries downThis most unkind of winters has interrupted food deliveries to seniors by Meals on Wheels in Palmerton, according to Richard Bowman, coordinator."We've had a lot of cancellations; more than usual," Bowman said. "We had back-to-back cancellations on Thursday and Friday."Since the end of the year, Bowman said the group has had six cancellations.Meals on Wheels delivers five days a week, Monday through Friday. On average, Bowman said volunteers serve about 20 clients per day, primarily from Palmerton, and some in Bowmanstown. To help support Meals on Wheels through a donation, send it to: Meals on Wheels Palmerton, 135 Lafayette Avenue, Palmerton, PA 18071.For those who would like to volunteer, or for more information, call Bowman at 610-826-1163, or 610-826-6107.Look for the silver liningWith so much snow around us, it's essential that people try to find something positive to strive for, according to Catherine Miller, community liaison for Blue Mountain Health System's Behavioral Health Department."A lot of this kind of falls under Seasonal Affective Disorder," Miller said. "Of course it's more extreme this winter because of all the extra snow we're getting."Whether cooped up in the house, or whenever possible outside, Miller urged people to keep busy."It's important for people to try to remain active, even if it's in their house, or if they can try to get out for a walk," she said. "It can decrease those symptoms of feeling depressed, or closed in."As hard as it may be, Miller recommended that people try to remain as upbeat as possible."Stay connected to family and friends; try to keep positive things going in your life," she said. "Fortunately, winter will end eventually."Though chances are for most, it can't come soon enough.
