Weatherly displays new truck

Citizens Fire Company of Weatherly showed off its newly acquired utility truck at Monday's borough council meeting.

The truck, used but in good shape, was purchased from a New Jersey dealership for $30,252.66.Fire company officials were on hand to display the truck after the meeting. One of them said a new truck would have cost at least $60,000.Snow ban complaintJohn Latniak, a resident of the borough for 34 years, complained to council that he and his son-in-law received tickets for their vehicles being illegally parked when the snow ban was reversed.According to police Chief Brian Markovchick, the men had from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to move their cars so that plowing could commence on the opposite side of Spring Street in this case.Latniak said they paid the tickets but that he didn't think they were fair.Council members and Markovchick explained to Latniak how the ban works and after a lengthy discussion convinced him that the tickets were in accordance with borough law.Cleaning upCouncil discussed enforcing a borough law that requires dog owners to pick up their dog's droppings, one of the frequent complaints to the borough by residents.Mayor Tom Connors said he would like the law amended to require dog owners to have bags and utensils to pick up after their pets.Council expects to discuss the amendment at next month's meeting.AppointmentsBorough Manager Harold Pudliner Jr. was appointed to represent Weatherly on the Carbon County Council of Governments and Councilman Harold "Chipper" Farrow was appointed alternate representative by a vote of 6-0, with Farrow abstaining.Council also reappointed Michael Bellizia to a four-year term on the planning commission and Sandra Eroh to a three-year term on the zoning hearing board, both on 7-0 votes.Other businessIn other matters:• Council approved moving forward on a Weatherly Booster Club proposal for hometown hero banners by a 7-0 vote.• Connors provided an update on the museum project. "We will start work on the back room and hope to have (it) completed by late spring or early summer," he said.• The mayor lauded the police department for recent heroin arrests in the borough.Markovchick said his department is working with the state attorney general's office and the state police drug task force, with funds being provided by the state.Distributed by MCT Information Services
