Bulldog matmen nab close win

Economically speaking, Southern Lehigh might be one of the best teams that Northern Lehigh will face all season long.

"Quality, and not quantity" can best sum up the type of lineup the Spartans utilize as they made a challenging team match out of a night that saw Northern Lehigh receive four forfeits. In the end, however, Steve Hluschak's Bulldog squad still had enough to hold off the pesky Spartans for the 34-30 Colonial League wrestling win."We're happy to get a win," Hluschak said. "Anytime you can get a win, you're going to take it. As an Economics teacher, I'll say this, 'Per capita, Southern Lehigh is pound-for-pound, one of the best teams in our league. They have forfeits, but the guys they do have are pretty solid up and down the lineup. So we're glad to get this win."With the match starting at the 138-pound weight class, the Spartans (2-3), started out with wins in five of the first seven matches, on their way to a 24-7 lead. The Bulldogs' Stephen Scheib picked up a 7-2 decision at 220, and then four straight weight classes went to the winners by virtue of a Spartan forfeit."We're really happy with the kids because they wrestled tough tonight," Southern Lehigh head coach Ian Beitler said. "Even the kids that didn't come out on the winning end of their matches, they still wrestled hard for the entire six minutes, and that's all that we're asking them to do."Hluschak echoed those same sentiments about his wrestlers that may not have notched a win, but came up huge with preventing their opponents from picking up any extra bonus points."A lot of guys did their job with not giving up bonus points," he said. "To us, those don't come up as wins in the scorebook, but they're wins to us, as a coaching staff. Theo Young was bumped up and gave up only three points, Matt Schmall at 126, only gave up a three point decision, and Ryan Farber, a freshman against a good senior came away with a great victory."Losing the coin flip at the beginning of the night put the hosts at a disadvantage, in terms of positioning personnel. However, the work had to be done and the battling in the trenches was where the match was eventually won."We lost the coin flip, so we knew we'd be at a disadvantage right away," Hluschak said. "But we did fight through that and found a way to get it done."Other than the forfeits, Nolehi got big points from Nate Farber, who got a trio of takedowns and reversals at 170 for a major. CJ Young dominated the third period of his match for a 9-2 decision at 152.The win improves Northern Lehigh's record to 4-1 on the season.No. Lehigh 34, So.
