Softball tournament aids fire company

A check presentation this past Saturday in the amount of $6,000 in the memory of Justin A. Berger, the son of Cheryl and Barry Berger, was made to the Albrightsville Fire Company where he had served as a junior firefighter before he passed away in 2011.

The funds represented the proceeds from the third annual Justin A. Berger Memorial Softball Tournament, which was held July 20.The tournament is organized and put on by the Berger family, with all proceeds being donated to the fire company to use as it wishes.This year's donation from the Justin A. Berger Memorial Fund will be used for a monument in memory of Justin, which will be placed in front of the fire company and will also recognize the deceased fallen firefighters of the Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company and deceased active social members of the fire company since its inception in 1975.Also, for each fallen firefighter of the fire company a brick will be purchased which will contain the firefighter's name and will be placed in the "Walk of Honor" at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in Emmitsburg, Md.Additionally, a scholarships program will be started with the Lehighton Area School District in memory of Justin Berger.Among the donors who helped make all of this possible were L.T. Verasstro, Inc.; Getz Transportation; Printing 4-U; Pine Ridge Services; Pilars Party Playhouses; Pocono Tap House; Beer Googles; Friedman's Electric; Carefree Greens; and numerous other corporate and personal donors.This year's Memorial Softball Tournament, which will be held Saturday, July 19, is open to the public, and consists of 10 participating teams, which play from 8 a.m. to dusk on the Berger family property.At the tournament there there will be food and refreshments available and as well as bouncy houses for children, there will also be a DJ providing music all day long.For more information or to become a sponsor or volunteer, contact the Albrightsville Fire Company at 570-722-8325 or at its website at
