Carbon man given jail term for resisting arrest; others enter pleas

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a prison term on Tuesday after pleading guilty to resisting arrest. He was one of 10 defendants in pending cases to enter a guilty plea before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Lehighton incidentShawn Patrick Latshaw, 41, Lehighton, was sentenced to serve three to 18 months in the county prison on a resisting arrest charge followed by one year of probation on a persistent disorderly count charge.Latshaw was arrested on Oct. 31 when borough police responded to 230 N. First St. for a report of an assault incident. On scene officers were told by Erwin Santiago-Melendoz that he had been assaulted by Latshaw, who he shared an apartment.Latshaw ran from police when they attempted to take him into custody but was later apprehended and jailed.In addition to the jail term Latshaw was ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment. He was given credit for 40 days spent in jail to date on the charges.It was also noted that Latshaw has a detainer filed against him by Lehigh County authorities for a probation violation.Other pleasOther defendants who entered guilty pleas included:Allen D. Miller Jr., 21, Slatington, entered guilty pleas in two pending cases.He pleaded to one count each of theft from a motor vehicle and criminal mischief for an incident on Jan. 13 in East Penn Township. He also pleaded to one count each of theft from a motor vehicle and criminal trespass for a second incident on Jan. 13, also in East Penn Township.He entered vehicles and a garage and took various items.He was recently sentenced to serve six to 12 months in prison in Northampton County on unrelated criminal charges and faces a sentencing date in Lehigh County on other criminal counts.Nanovic sentenced him to serve three to 18 months on the criminal trespass count running concurrent with the Northampton sentence. The jail term is followed by two years of probation also concurrent.He was placed on probation on the other counts for a year each, all running concurrent to each other and to the Northampton sentence.He was ordered to make total restitution to various victims of $2,395.50, get a D&A evaluation, and supply a DNA sample.Nashadeem Tyrone Henderson, 18, Philadelphia, pleaded to one count of simple assault. He was arrested by state police at Lehighton for assaulting a 17-year-old male at the state juvenile facility, Camp Adams, in Penn Forest Township, on Oct. 20.Nanovic sentenced him to serve one to 12 months in prison with credit for 51 days already served and immediately paroled him.Thomas Crawford, 33, Albrightsville, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance-marijuana.Crawford was arrested on May 7 at 34 Mansi Trail, in Penn Forest Township, when state police at Fern Ridge served a search warrant. The warrant was for Crawford on unrelated counts. While taking him into custody the troopers found marijuana on his person.Nanovic placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get a D&A evaluation.Nicholas Sterling Minnich, 24, Sumneytown, Montgomery County, pleaded to one count of defiant trespass.He was arrested on July 24 at the residence of Albert and Michelle Minnich, at 201 Main St., Parryville. He was originally charged with burglary but the charge was dropped in a plea bargain. The victims are his father and stepmother. He said he and his parents are "talking."Nanovic imposed only court costs.Samuel J. Heydt, 46, Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count each of accidents involving damage to an attended vehicle, and summary motor vehicle code offenses of driving without a license, driving while under suspension, and financial responsibility (no insurance).He was arrested on Oct. 23 after being involved in an accident along SR903 in Penn Forest Township, in which the other driver and passengers were injured. After the collision Hedyt left the scene on foot but was later located by troopers.In a plea bargain seven other counts were dropped.Nanovic placed him on probation for a year and ordered he make total restitution of $10,935.40 to victims and an insurance carrier, and get a D&A evaluation.On the three summary offenses he was fined a total of $700 and costs.Lawney Lee Strohl, 45, last known address Weissport, pleaded in two pending cases.He pleaded to one count of defiant trespass for an incident Nov. 6, 2012, at Levine's Salvage Yard in Franklin Township, and to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana for an incident on April 23, following a vehicle stop along SR209 in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton.On the trespass count he was sentenced to time served (132 days) to one year in jail and on the possession count, a fine of $500.August Eli Harsch, 23, Saylorsburg, pleaded to two counts of theft and one of criminal mischief. He was arrested on Sept. 17 by state police at Lehighton for an incident at the Alliance Sand Quarry, at 415 Golf Road in Lower Towamensing Township, where metal scraps and other items were reported taken along with a 2002 Ford truck, not owned by the sand quarry.Sentencing was deferred until a restitution figure can be determined.Jennifer Gongora, 28, Kunkletown, pleaded to one count of furnishing drug free urine in an attempt to deceive. She appeared at the adult probation office at the courthouse in Jim Thorpe on July 23 for a urine screen. She attempted to provide a urine sample that was not hers because she admitted using a prohibited substance before appearing at the courthouse.Sentencing was deferred. Gongora is currently in the county prison on a probation violation.Randi Alexandria Solt, 25, Lehighton, pleaded to one count of receiving stolen property. She was arrested on Oct. 1, 2011, for taking jewelry from the residence of Richele Marie Bergdah. She was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition (ARD) probation program for first time offenders, but was revoked from it for violating conditions.Nanovic placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a D&A evaluation and make restitution to the victim of $1,500.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
