Dentist honored for 'giving back to community'

Summit Hill dentist, Dr. Richard Vermillion, was recognized by Panther Valley Superintendent, Rosemary Porembo during the Panther Valley School Board meeting Thursday evening.

Porembo said that every year, the board approves a school dentist at a low salary of $600 and that every year Dr. Vermillion would provide all the dental exams "but never take his stipend.""It is so wonderful when you could take time to commend someone for giving of themselves; their talents, their expertise and giving back to the community," said Porembo, who noted that Vermillion had been providing the service for six years and that it was "remarkable" and "outstanding."Porembo then thanked him and presented him with a certificate of appreciation.The agreement with The Architectural Studio for the proposed renovation of the pool into classrooms located at the Panther Valley High School has been approved by the school board.The board accepted the resignation of the high school custodian, Stephen Harrison and the districtwide truant officer/disciplinarian, Elizabeth Wehr.The uncompensated leave of absence request of middle school physical education teacher, Bobbi Sisock, was approved. Sisock requested leave beginning Oct. 16 through the end of the school year, returning for the 2014-2015 term.The board also accepted the resignation of Kasey Gray as paid assistant cheerleading adviser to volunteer cheerleading adviser.The board appointed Jackie Nalesnik as a part-time cafeteria worker at $11.85 per hour; Daniel Albeck as a full-time custodian at $13.34 per hour; and Justine Shamey-Bauder as a special-education teacher at $36,645.Also approved was Tracey Fertally as special education department head at a stipend of $850.The transfer of Mary Hoffman from high school special education learning support to elementary special education, grades 3-5, was approved.Approval was given to the job creation of special education department administrative assistant.The board voted to approve the transfer of special education secretary Jennifer Kupetz from the position of special education secretary to the position of special education department administrative assistant at $9.75 per hour.The board then voted to abolish the position of special education secretary.The board also approved Kathryn Santore and Deborah Schaller as substitute instructional aides at $8.80 per hour and Schaller as a substitute custodian at $9.40 per hour; and Lisa Bauder as a substitute cafeteria worker at $8 per hour.The transfer of a part-time elementary custodian to a part-time high school custodian died due to lack of motion along with the hiring of an individual as a substitute cafeteria worker.The board added the following individuals to the list of substitute teacher for the 2013-2014 at a per diem rate of $90: Erin Bonner, Kayla Field, Michelle Hock, Kayla Kromer, Corrine Gates and Ashley Stratchko.Lisa Clouser and Bonnie Vasiliou were added to the list of bus monitors, and Gwyneth Collevechio, Robert Thomas and Jacob Szczecina, (pending clearance) were approved as fall workers at $25 per event.Fall coaches/activities coordinators approved were Justin Kern as a volunteer for football and Heidi Seiwell at $262.50, prorated, until a new coach is found, for cheerleading.Winter coaches/activities coordinators approved for boys basketball were Pat Crampsie, $3,700; Mark Lazar, $2,245; Andrew Michalik, $1,375; Erica Barron, $1,250; and Charles DePuy, James Filer, Terry Bonner, Ken Miller, Keith Gogal, Shawn Midas and Richard Evanko as volunteers.For girls basketball, Chris McLaughlin, $2,100, and Jim Barron as a volunteer were approved.Wrestling approvals include Tim Robb, $4,900; Ed Kennedy, $1,550; Richard Bower Jr.,$1,550; Ben Warren, $1,450; and Michael O'Donnell as a volunteer; and for cheerleading, Hallie Seiwell at $1,675 and Heidi Sewell, $762.50.Victoria Benack and Christine Turner were approved as elementary school chaperones.Other items approved included:• a contract with TSA Consultants to be administrator of the district's 403(b) plan at no cost to the district; the advertisement of a Request for Proposal for Technology Support Services;• approval for homebound instruction for a 10th-grade student and a 1st-grade student;• participation in the Artist in Residency program with the Allentown Art Museum at a net cost to the district of $1,920;• a Pro Care Therapy, Inc. contract for a part-time school psychologist at a rate not to exceed $25,000;• a CLIU #21 contract for two days per month in-class training for math at a cost of $7,000 paid from an ABG grant;• for the middle school Eighth Grade Team to enter a proposal to provide one-on-one tablet/computer programs for all eighth-grade students on the KickStarter.com website at no cost to the district;• a Letter of Agreement between CMS Medical Care Corporation/Healthy Smiles, Happy Kids Dental Van;• and to approve the second reading and revision of Policy #217 (Section: Pupils/Graduation requirements).The board voted to deny Teamster Grievance #01-13-14 and PVEA Grievance #2013-2014.In other matters, business manager Kenneth Marx reported that cameras are installed on the buses and that the kids, "know that they are there." Marx noted that there has been a slight problem with recording stemming from digital cards but that the problem will be corrected.The Rite Aid store recently contacted board President Jeff Markovich complaining about spectators using the Rite Aid parking lot during football games and wanted the district to have security patrol the premises to prevent the problem.Markovich instructed Rite Aid to call the police when this happens.A courtesy announcement will be made at home football games and residents are urged to park elsewhere other than on the Rite Aid, Boyer's or car wash properties.The next school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Oct. 24.
