Wanted Tamaqua man leads police on car chase

A Tamaqua resident is behind bars after leading police on a car chase last Thursday night near the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem.

According to paperwork filed before District Justice Patricia A. Romig-Passaro of Bethlehem, a Bethlehem police officer on patrol made an attempt to pull over James J. Beasley, 36, of Tamaqua, when the officer noticed the suspect's expired inspection sticker.Beasley refused to stop for police, court papers say, and sped through a parking lot of local cigar store, narrowly missing a pedestrian.The report added that Beasley then drove along a set of railroad tracks, eventually returning back to the road while failing to stop at stop signs, driving the wrong way and ignoring traffic lights.Records added that Beasley wound up stopped in the 1600 block of East Eighth Street near the Sands Casino Resort after nearly striking a vehicle with two women inside. He took off then, on foot, court papers say. A city officer spotted him later, without a shirt.Court papers say Beasley was out of breath and had blades of grass sticking out of his shoes. The report adds that Beasley provided police with a fake name before they were able to accurately identify him.Authorities found drug paraphernalia in Beasley's possession. One of the recorded items consisted of waxed baggies; which are commonly used to store heroin according to court documents. In addition, authorities say they found a drug-related warrant out of Montgomery County for Beasley.He was transported to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $50,000 straight bail.Beasley was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude officer, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, driving the wrong way, two counts of ignoring duties at stop sign, failure to stop at red signal, driving at unsafe speed, operating vehicle without valid inspection, operating vehicle without valid insurance, possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false identification to law enforcement, and driving without a license.
