Weissport Council has resigned itself to PennDOT's decision to not include a temporary traffic light at the intersection of Bridge and Franklin streets.

"We've done all we can," said Weissport Council vice president Sue Pywar. "We've had our engineer look into and contact PennDOT."Heather Heeter, senior project engineer, PennDOT, recently gave this reply to the issue:"Unfortunately the decision to include the temporary traffic signal is made by the District Traffic Engineer and not myself. The determination to install a traffic signal is based on warrant analysis from traffic volume data. The intersection of Franklin Street and Bridge Street did not come close to meeting any of the warrant analysis for a temporary traffic signal."Heeter continued, "Per our discussion at our March 25h meeting and additional follow up discussions, the Department has agreed to provide a crossing guard for BHA Associates facility for students enrolled in the summer program for both the unloading and loading of students during the duration of the detour."Pywar said that Weissport traffic will be unbearable during the detour, but that council has done all it can."We've contacted the county commissioners and our state representative," said Pywar.Residents attending the meeting said they were going to have a petition signed."We'll take it around town," said Lynette Moyer. "I'm not sure if it can make a difference, but we have to try."Pywar has been adamant that Weissport residents will have a difficult time accessing Bridge Street during the detour of traffic during the construction of the McCall bridge next summer.At the initial meeting of PennDOT with the public, Pywar has brought up the issue of a traffic light that would be triggered by residents who need to enter the traffic on Bridge Street.Council members also discussed the police Alert System that seems to have disappeared from the police computer.Secretary Dana Brubaker said that council paid $800 for the installation in 2008.Police officer Steven Armbruster said that without the system, he cannot begin to clear up the backlog of cases.Attorney Mike Greek said that someone should contact the company and get another copy of the program and pay for any updates."You have proof you paid for it," said Greek. "It shouldn't be an issue."In other matters:• Council noted that it has received $44,365 in garage fees and taxes from the tax collector in the past month.• Council voted to hire Jillyan Sterling as assistant secretary-treasurer.• Armbruster introduced the Rev. John Hughes, pastor of Hope Community Fellowship Church. Armbruster said that the church congregation is trying to help Weissport residents with counseling, food, clothing and shelter resources.• Council voted to purchase a 60 gallon air compressor from Lowes.
