Shenandoah fire possibly caused by scattered garbage

Residents in Shenandoah arose just before 4 a.m. Sunday morning to the sound of fire whistles and sirens after a neighbor reported seeing flames shooting from the rear of 111-113 South Chestnut Street.

Firefighters on scene stated that the fire started in the rear of the home at its southwest corner along Atlantic Street and across the street from the rear of Trinity Academy, the local Roman Catholic elementary school. The home is also across from the rectory of St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church on Chestnut Street."When we arrived at the scene, there was heavy fire to the back corner of the house," said fire marshal Richard Examitis. "It was pretty well going when we got there."Examitis said that no one was living at the home at the time, despite having electrical service.Neighbors pointed out that the home has been vacant for years. The owner of the property is listed as Arthur Charles Fedder according to the county parcel locator.Firefighters had the blaze under control in less than 45 minutes. "The source of ignition is undetermined; however, it appears that it started outside the property with some trash," Examitis said. "There were two garbage cans there. One didn't light up and is still there, but there was one next to it and it's gone. We know it started with the trash but we can't determine the source of the ignition itself. It was a trash fire that spread to the building."Examitis said no injuries were reported.
