County hires firm to repave Beaver Street

Carbon County commissioners on Thursday hired Hanson Aggregates, of Stroudsburg, for $78,630.04 to repave Beaver Street in Mahoning Township.

Hanson was the lowest of five bidders for the Community Development Block Grant project.Other bids were $86,455.62, submitted by Livengood Excavators Inc., Walnutport; $83,939.85 by Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction, Tamaqua; $81,895.97 by Popple Construction, Laflin, Luzerne County; and $81,364.69 by Bruce George Paving and Excavating, Inc., Kunkletown.In other matters, commissioners:*Approved a work-based learning agreement between the county and Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit #21 for the 2013-2014 school year, allowing a maximum number of six students to be assigned to the county Archives Department;*Approved $2,094.39 in change orders for the railroad station restroom renovation project. The work is being done by KESK Corp., Jim Thorpe. The changes include additional overhead door closers at $254.10; new wall construction in the men's restroom at $702.81; new wooden door jambs at $558.69; and the fabrication and installation of a heat shield and cover for an existing hallway radiator at $578.79;*Approved an agreement with Jim Thorpe Auto rentals for the lease of two 15-passenger vans for the liquid fuels summer program at $6,100 ($350 less than last year's lease). The lease starts May 24 and ends Aug. 16;*Approved special activities agreements for Mauch Chunk Lake Park with Hazleton YMCA/YWCA for its annual Anthracite Triathalon and Youth Splash & Dash on July 20-21, and with the Tamaqua Bass Club for its annual bass fishing tournaments on June 19 and 26; July 10,17, 24 and 31; and Aug. 7, 14, 21, and 28.
