A Carbon County commissioner said that the county is looking into cleaning an area of sidewalks that needs some attention.

During the county commissioners' meeting Thursday, Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard updated the board on the sidewalks along Route 209, coming into Jim Thorpe right off of the Route 903 bridge.Last week, Bob Schaninger, a resident of Jim Thorpe, brought the issue of cinders on the sidewalks to the commissioners' attention and asked if they could sweep them off so it wouldn't be such a hazard when walking on them.Gerhard said that after that meeting, he did a little research and learned that the sidewalks were not PennDOT's responsibility, so the county plans to speak with the Jim Thorpe Borough to see if an agreement could be reached to resolve the issue."The county wants to work together (with Jim Thorpe) to resolve this and get the sidewalks clean," he said. "We're working on it."In other matters, Commissioner Wayne Nothstein said that the restroom renovation project at the Old Mauch Chunk Train Station in downtown Jim Thorpe is underway. The project began last week.Nothstein said that as long as no issues arise, the renovations should be complete in 45 days.The board also acted on the following items:• Approve an Automated Clearing House agreement with Mauch Chunk Trust Company.• Approve the annual maintenance/service agreement between the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Institute and the county relative to payment and respective responsibilities to maintain and support the Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification System program in the county. The cost remains $1,408.32 and shall be from Jan. 1, to Dec. 31, 2013.• Approve an agreement with Suzette Kurtz of Lehighton to provide logistics and accuracy testing procedures for the 2013 primary and general elections. Compensation shall be $20 an hour, not to exceed 125 hours.• Approve agreements with Kristian Koehler of Jim Thorpe and Robert Miller of Nesquehoning for the primary and general elections. The two will act as roving troubleshooters during the elections. Compensation will be $200 for the day plus 45 cents a mile in travel.
