Aquashicola Fire Co. conducts Hurricane Sandy relief toy drive

They get by with a little help from their friends.

In this particular case, they would be the Union Township, New Jersey Santa in Blue project, and their friends would be the Aquashicola Fire Company.Recently, the fire company, with the help of many people and organizations, ran a toy drive/Hurricane Sandy relief project in which they collected new or like new toys to give to the Union Township, NJ Santa in Blue Drive project.Laurie Ragsdale, who serves as General Operations Clerk, Wilbeth Shop, for Dominion East Ohio Gas Co., said the shops who participated in their toy drive are located in Akron, Canton, Youngstown and Cleveland Ohio.Dominion Virginia Power is its sister company, said Ragsdale, who added they are the original first responders deployed to New York and New Jersey by Dominion for power restoration.Dominion East Ohio Gas Co. does natural gas work, and its crews were sent in a little after the electric workers to help with the gas side of the restoration efforts, Ragsdale said."Our toy drive was started when one employee in New Jersey talked to another employee here in Ohio telling him how bad things were there in New Jersey, and that it would be nice if we could help the kids there this Christmas," Ragsdale said. "This employee here in Ohio (Bill Mantle) started calling people he knew in our different shops trying to get a toy drive together."Ragsdale, who said she had previously worked in three other shops before coming to the Akron shop and had contacts everywhere, coordinated all of Mantle's efforts and ideas. She said "this toy drive was the direct result of our union, employees, supervisors, managers, directors, and everyone in between working together."All the toys were distributed directly to the families affected by Hurricane Sandy, as over 1,000 families there had been displaced by the storm.Michael D Boll, Sgt from the Union Township Police Department who is in charge of the Santa in Blue Drive project, explained that in 1995, several officers got together and decided to do something for their community during the holidays. The officers collect toys and personally hand deliver them to the less fortunate Union residents.By the following year, Boll said the entire department - with the assistance from towns residents and local businesses - got involved, and the toy drive took off. Each year, he said the Township of Union's Santa in Blue toy drive collects thousands of toys and drop off an entire holiday bag to town's less fortunate residents, such as families with a recent tragedy, and those families that have a loved one serving in the war."This year, we decided to donate the toys to the victims of the Hurricane Sandy," Boll said. "The schools will take care of our local families."Boll said the group decided to meet with the Mayor, town council, town and schools, and to promote the event by inviting every community in Union County to help them collect toys and gifts. He said "since we asked our neighboring towns for assistance, the response has been overwhelming."The group asked NJ celebrities to join their cause and help promote the event. Since then, they've received full support from local and state politicians; Labor Unions; as well as their Professional State Sport Teams, such as Rex Ryan and the Jets; New Jersey Devils; NJ UFC; and MMA fighters; Newark Mayor Rich Codey; actor Cory Booker; Anderson Cooper; Ray Liotta; Keith Loneker; Sirius Radio Hosts Opie and Anthony; Covino and Rich; and Ron and Fez; as well as Comics Jim Norton; Rev Bob Levy; Richard Vos; Rappers and musicians Dougie Fresh and the Fugees; and Reality Stars the cake Boss and staff. The list continue to grows every day and all the above celebs and athletes have been promoting this toy drive by posting the toy drive on their social networks.
