Brad Simpson, 42, of 372 W. Snyder Ave., Lansford, faces charges from an incident which took place on October 22 at Valley Athletic Supply. A charge of receiving stolen property was filed by Lansford Officer Christopher M. Ondrus.

Simpson was picked up on an arrest warrant by police and state parole. He was arraigned and committed to prison under $8,500 bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause, here's what happened:At about 6:10 p.m. Oct. 22, Ondruis was contacted by an employee of Valley Athletic Supply, who reported a theft from the business. The employee had been approached by a woman who wanted to return the stolen items, which she said were given to her by Simpson, a neighbor.The woman described Simpson, and employees recalled seeing a man matching that description in the store and the hallway earlier that day, looking at merchandise. He had also been there before. On Oct. 22, he had asked that a ski mask be put away for him, and that he owuold be in later to pay for it.The employee checked the items the woman returned and found that they were from the store, and had not been paid for. They included a gray Phillies T-shirt, white Under Armor padded shorts, and a black Holloway jacket, totaling $55.47.The items all had 50 percent off tags and would have been hanging in the hallway. Staff found empty hangers where the items would have been.The woman told Ondrus that Simpson had given her the items earlier that day for herself and for her son. She and her son believed they had been stolen, due to the presence of the price tags. She also said Simpson had told her he was unemployed, which made her curious as to how he could afford to buy the items. It was then she decided to take them back to the store.Ondrus interviewed Simpson after giving him his Miranda rights. Simpson told Ondrus he was at the store, but denied taking or buying anything. He said he wanted to get a shirt, and talked to a clerk, but did not recall the conversation. He gave Ondrus a written statement that he did not recall anything that was taken from the store.Ondrus retreived the stolen items from the store and interviewed Simpson again, after again giving him his Miranda rights. Ondrus showed him the items and asked if he recalled giving them to his neighbor. Simpson looked at them, and said he didn't recall seeing them or giving them to anyone.Simpson told Ondrus he blacks out a lot from alcohol and drugs. He told Ondrus he didn't think his neighbor would make up the story. He also said he didn't think he would have bought the items, because they were not things he would want, and that he could not have bought them because he is unemployed.
