Bicyclist facing DUI charges
A Carbon County bicyclist is facing charges of driving under the influence (DUI) following an incident in Jim Thorpe on June 11.
Borough police said about 11:15 p.m. they were dispatched to the inner borough bridge for a report of a bicycle crashing into a pickup truck.
On scene the officers spoke to Dale Feller, who said he was operating a 1989 Dodge Dakota truck northbound on SR903 across the bridge when a bicyclist crossed into his lane of travel and struck the front of his vehicle. Feller stated the bicyclist was ejected from the bike into the passenger side windshield of the truck. Feller further stated the bicyclist fled the scene. Police observed heavy damage to the windshield of the truck and a large amount of blood mixed with broken glass on the pavement near the passenger side of the front wheel of the truck.
Police said they found the bicyclist, identified as Arthur Scott Hanman, 44, of 49 W. Fourth St., Jim Thorpe, in a nearby yard. Hanman had a large amount of blood running down his face and neck. He also displayed signs of intoxication.
Due to his condition, an EMS unit was dispatched to the scene and Hanman was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. Police obtained a search warrant to get Hanman's blood. A test revealed a .10 BAC and the presence of a controlled substance.
Hanman has been charged with three counts of DUI, and several summary motor vehicle code violations.
