Quick start lifts Palmerton

Palmerton girls head coach Don Delich wasn't sure what to expect from his team coming off the holiday break.

It didn't take long for him to sport a comfortable smile, however. The Lady Bombers jumped out to a 19-point first quarter lead and rode their tantilizing press for some easy buckets and a 62-23 victory over Northern Lehigh in a return to Colonial League action."When you play a team that's not as physically skilled as yours you have to jump on them quickly and we did," said Delich afterwards. "I thought we executed our game plan to a T. There was great hustle and intensity, what you usually see in a Northern Lehigh-Palmerton game and our kids really took it to them."Emily Meinhart scored 10 of her 15 points in the first quarter run and Jade Farquhar added seven pushing Palmerton out to a 29-10 lead in the first eight minutes. Emily Bevans had seven of her 10 points in the first quarter for the Lady Bulldogs."Emily has been on a roll," said Delich. "She's rebounding, she's playing good defense on the defensive end and offensively she's a post presence and a scorer from there which makes it very difficult to defend."Jade and Madison (Mummey) played very well also. We're just getting our act together."The Lady Bombers widened their lead to 40-14 at halftime, holding Northern Lehigh to just four points in the second quarter. All the Lady Bulldogs would score in the third quarter was four points and they closed with five points (all free throws).Farquhar tied Meinhart with a game-high 15 points and Abbie Reimer also hit double figures off the bench with 10.Bevans was the lone Northern Lehigh player in doubles."We were prepared for anything they were going to run at us," said Northern Lehigh head coach Tony Thomas, who coached the Palmerton JV's last year. "We hd an idea what they were going to do. We just didn't execute. Give Palmerton all the credit in the world. They're going to make you pay for not executing. They're a great team. I expect them to be in the hunt down the road."Until we correct what we continuely do wrong, and it's consistently every game, we're not going to be able to contend."I said in the beginning of the year it's going to take time. It's a learning process right now and we're trying to teach them the best possible way we can. It's a tough road. You have to take your lumps before you can do that."NO.LEHIGHFollweiler 1-1-4-3, Mazzocha 0-0-0-0, Schlegel 0-0-0-0, Weil 0-3-5-3, Stauffer 0-0-0-0, Olewine 2-0-0-5, Tarafas 1-0-0-2, Bevans 3-4-5-10, Garramone 0-0-0-0, Harlan 0-0-0-0, Horwath 0-0-0-0.
