Jaclyn Ivancich and her sixth-grade students at Towamensing Elementary School were discussing the horrific effects from Hurricane Sandy.

"They wanted to do something for the victims. To help in some way. My dad, Bill George, is the fire chief at the Aquashicola Vol. Fire Co. I knew they were involved in a drive to collect items for the community of Union Township, N.J. along with First Northern Bank and Trust. I thought if the kids wanted to collect items, we could send our donations along with those from the fire company and the bank," says Ivancich.So her class and teacher Lindsay Serfass's sixth grade class, asked the whole school help them collect as much as they could."They did an amazing job," says Ivancich. "They really worked hard on this project, and are excited to be giving back this holiday season."Monday the sixth graders loaded a truck with their donations of food, toys, personal hygiene items, diapers and cleaning supplies."I think it's terrific that they put forth this effort to help people," says Bill George, who helped them load the items along with Chris Jahelka, Aquashicola's assistant fire chief.He adds that the whole Palmerton community has done an amazing job of donating items, filling the firehouse. All those items will be loaded on trucks Saturday, Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. and they will then deliver the items on Sunday, Dec. 16 to Union Township, NJ.
