They exchanged war stories over eggs and a hot cup of coffee.

Surrounded by family and friends, local veterans were toasted at the third annual Veteran Honorary Brunch and Entertainment Gala held recently at the Village at Palmerton.Along with their brunch, veterans who attended were treated to entertainment by the Pure Country Gospel Duo, and were greeted with an appearance by state Rep. Doyle Heffley.Norma Kunkel, director of marketing and admissions, said it was evident the veterans thoroughly enjoyed themselves."The turnout was wonderful," Kunkel said. "I saw a few more new faces."Norman Sheckler, of Lehighton, an Army veteran who served from 1962-63 during the Berlin Crisis, has nothing but praise for the Village."It's nice that they have something like this for our veterans," said Sheckler, 74. "I feel good about it, that there is something like this for us."Sheckler, who attended the function with his wife, Letitia, added "the food was excellent; you can't ask for anything better."Seated across the table from Sheckler was his cousin, Ronald Wentz, of Palmerton, who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.Wentz, who attended the event with his wife, Jean, said he was thankful for the respect shown by the Village to the veterans."It's nice," said Wentz, 68. "We never got recognized before."After brunch, Herb Santee, a member of Pure Country Gospel Duo, took a moment to thank the veterans."I'd like to welcome the veterans; I'm a veteran myself, and I want to thank you guys for serving," Santee said. "I hope we can bring some joy into your lives."Midway through, Heffley arrived to offer heady praise and appreciation to the veterans."I'd like to thank all of our veterans for what you have contributed to our country, whether you served in conflict, or in peace," Heffley said. "For all our veterans did for our country, this is the time to honor them."However, Heffley noted it wasn't just the male veterans, but, also, the female veterans who have also served our country, that deserved praise."Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our country," he said. "If you see a veteran, thank them for their service, and shake their hand."The Village at Palmerton is a personal care home which provides both independent living as well as personal care.
