Major damages resulted from an early morning fire on Sunday in Packer Township.

The blaze occurred at about 5 o'clock at the residence of John and Joan Glavin, 28 Packer Drive, a short distance from the Weatherly Borough boundary.Firemen from eight companies responded to the home, which sustained damages to its living room and kitchen, as well as a sizable portion of the roof on the ranch-style structure. More seriously, the garage attached to the home was destroyed and two vehicles kept inside were also left in ruins.Firemen from Weatherly, Beaver Meadows, Tresckow, Quakake, Freeland, Lehigh and Lausanne, Hometown and Hazle Township were dispatched to the scene, while the West Hazleton Fire Company manned the Weatherly station. In addition, the Weatherly Ambulance responded, although there were no injuries.Weatherly Assistant Fire Chief Eric Brill said the fire, which started in the garage, had already spread to the attic of the home by the time firemen arrived. He credited quick action by the firemen in preventing the home from total destruction, noting the structure was fully engulfed in flames when apparatus pulled onto the scene.He said firemen utilized a hydrant located about 1,000 feet from the scene by connecting a five-inch line to it to supplement water tanker trucks that were also on scene.Brill said the Glavins were able to escape the fire without injury. He said the couple is not able to reside in the home, which also sustained a considerable amount of smoke and water damages, and would be staying in another property they own.The assistant chief said it appeared the fire was accidental in nature, although a state police fire marshal will be investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of it.
