Bears, Mounts reach league championship

The story of the night at the Mountain Valley Conference volleyball semi finals was front line power.

Pleasant Valley and Stroudsburg created that story line dominating their respective opponents at the net to advance to the MVC final that will be held Thursday at Pocono Mountain West at 7 p.m.The Bears showed their opponent East Stroudsburg South that it was not going to be an easy night. The Cavs put a bit of a fight in the first set, but the Bears proved to be too much, winning 25-13, 25-5, and 25-8 to advance to the MVC final.Pleasant Valley showed early and often that they could not only strike the ball with force, but pretty much guide the ball to an open area whenever they wanted. ES South challenged the Bears for the first half of the first set, but after the Cavs pulled within two, PV turned it on and increased their lead to 10. It was the only time the Bears would see a challenge and PV coach John Gesiskie was happy with the way his team came out and made a statement."We came out and really jumped on them early, but the thing I really like about this team is that I play 11 players," said Gesiskie. "Good volleyball teams can usually only depend on six players and we have 11, so it's easy to see why if we make a mistake somebody else can step up and correct it. I'm just really happy with these girls especially in the last few weeks. They've really stepped up their conditioning, asking for it because they want to make it as far as they can in the postseason."A main reason for the Bears dominance on the evening were hitters Breanna Joseph (eight kills) and Courtney Miller (11 kills). Joseph's power at the net was unmatched throughout the night and Miller was always busy doing something whether it be a kill or a block."I was just trying to play smart and hit with authority in the right spots," said Joseph. "We're all working together really well right now and our chemistry is the best it has been all year. I'm just glad I could help my teammates get a win tonight and we just have to do our best to keep it up and keep winning."Joseph's partner in crime on the night Courtney Miller also weighed in on the Bears' performance."We were very prepared for this game, we hit it to the open spots and we succeeded," said Miller. "We're just really looking forward to the final against Stroudsburg and our goal is to advance far into the postseason."Besides the Bears, Lehighton was another TIMES NEWS area team that qualified for the MVC semi finals. Unfortunately, for the Indians they ran into a very good team in Stroudsburg. The Mounties possess power at the front much like the Bears and used that to their advantage to capture a 25-15, 25-9, and 25-21 three sets to none victory.A big reason for the mounties success was junior Sarah Fillman, who had 21 kills on the night. Fillman reached the 500 kill plateau against the Indians and was also named the Most Valuable Player of the MVC earlier in the week. This is the first time ever that Stroudsburg has advanced to the MVC Final.Lehighton also had a nice bounce back season after not qualifying for leagues or district play last season. Lehighton finished their 2011 season with a 5-1 record in their last six games and Indians' coach TJ O'Connor thinks that momentum carried into this season. O'Connor hopes that the momentum from a solid regular season can carry into district play and also into their 2013 campaign."Finishing the way we did last year we hoped that the end of this season we could qualify for league and district play and we did that. Getting here is a great step forward for the program," said O'Connor. "We kinda wished we would have played better today and I believe we played great at times, we just need to get more consistent. We only have three seniors so the experience these younger girls gained who are coming back next season is great for us. We just need to continue to get better and play more consistent volleyball when we play Blue Mountain on Saturday."For Lehighton Jackie Jordan finished with eight kills and 10 digs with Dallas Seltzer chipping in with five kills and 10 digs.
