Several events are scheduled for the Labor Day weekend at the two state parks in Schuylkill County.

The events are set for Tuscarora and Locust Lake parks.On Saturday, Sept. 1, from noon to 3 p.m. the Oak Loop Trail hike will be held at Locust Lake. The trail is four miles in length and difficult. Naturalist Robin Tracey will lead the hike. The trail loops around Locust Creek and traverses up the mountain for a great view of the forest below. Park of the hike includes the "tree identification trail" created by one of the Eagle Scouts. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Meet at the visitor parking lot at noon. Contact Tracey at (570)-467-2506 for more information. Hike is shine only.Also on Saturday, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Sneaky Salamanders will be held. Join the park naturalist for a salamander program at Locust Lake. Tracey will discuss salamander anatomy, habitat, and role in the ecosystem. A field identification capture and release walk will follow. Participants will meet at the amphitheater and bring along a plastic container for animal collection. Held shine only.Third event on Saturday, from 8 to 10 p.m., at the Locust Lake amphitheater is a star party. The Hazleton Area Astronomical Society members will begin with a slide program at 8 p.m. followed by a sky viewing through telescopes on the south boat launch parking lot area. The members will be available to answer any questions you might have about astronomy. This is a great family program and is free and open to the public. Held shine only.On Monday, Sept. 3, from 1 to 4 p.m., Long Loop Trail hike will be held with Tracey on the Crow, Lake View, and Spirit trails. The hike is seven miles in length and moderate in difficulty. This is the first time Tracey will be offering this hike and it combines the best of the trails in Tuscarora park. Participants should meet in the Crow Trail parking lot off Tuscarora Mountain Road. This is a dog friendly hike, but all pets must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Held shine only.
