Some people just can't wait for the Carbon County Fair. Some might call it downright "Smashing."

Some come for the food. Many enjoy the craft and food entries. A big draw is the entertainment and who doesn't like looking at the animals? Kids love the rides.But everyone of all ages come for the Demolition Derby. For some reason, we love to see cars smashing into cars and root for our favorite drivers to be the last man, or it could be said, last car standing.Last night the four and six cylinder compact cars competed in the exciting Figure 8 event and a real crowd-pleaser was the camper demolition derby.The Figure 8 feature winner was No. 83 Randy Ahner, the Camper Derby winner was Jason Leep and the Small Car Winner was No. 55 Gerald Ripkey. Lonnie Behler was the driver that drove through the large camper.Shirley Clemons says she likes to see them smash up.Little Rodney Stewart, Jr. calls the Derby, "Neat-o."Cindy Faust and her son, Noah, of Palmerton enjoyed the evening's smash and crash excitement."I've always loved demolition derbies growing up. Now I like bringing my son to them," she says.People really seemed to get a kick out of the pop-up camper derby. Especially when on impact it sent the contents flying, like cushions, tablecloths, plates and dishes and even clothing, scattering it along the track.The crowd went wild when Jason Leap of Kunkletown drove over the remains of Jared Strohl's camper. But at the end, winner Leap stopped next to second place Strohl and offered him a handshake through the window, no hard feelings.Folks like Delbert Christman, Bobby and Pauline Eckhart of Palmerton, come every day, since it's right in their own backyard, so to speak.They especially enjoy the entertainment.On Wednesday night they were there for all three performances of the band, "Remember When," a group that plays oldies music, especially from the era of the 1050s when rock and roll was just beginning to shake up the world.Sisters Cindy Fragassi of Easton and Patsy Walton of Weatherly, along with friends Ann Marie Shenosky of White Haven and Betty Smith of Weatherly are self-proclaimed "groupies" of the band and danced the night away."We follow them wherever they play. We just love them," says Patsy."We love to dance and they play our kind of music," says Cindy.It is Children's Day at the Carbon County Fair today. Children 12 and under can register for a chance to win one of six free bicycles, drawing will be around 8 p.m. at the Main Stage. The first 400 children to enter Farmer For A Day will receive a free coupon for a free dinner at Old Country Buffet. Crazy Hearts will be performing on the Main Stage at 5, 7 and 9 p.m. The Extreme Hybrid Wrestling will be featured in the arena at 7 p.m.Bob Silliman, president of the Carbon County Fair said they were very pleased with the Wednesday's fair."The midways were packed, the demolition derbies were packed, the weather was great and it was a good night. We thank all the people who came out to support us," he says.A rumor was going around that the fair might shut down today due to the weather forecast but as of this morning, Silliman says he doesn't know where that rumor came from but the fair is scheduled to open today at 3 p.m. and invites everyone to come out for a good time.
