Flags placed at East Penn veterans' memorial

After telling East Penn supervisors in June that the lack of flags at the Veterans' Memorial in Marvin Gardens was a disgrace, David Bryfogel was back July 2 to say, as vice president of the United Veterans Organization, he got flags through Rep. Doyle Heffley's office. He credited Sue and Harry Porcina with taking the flags down at dusk and putting them up in the morning because there are no lights which are needed when flags are kept up overnight.

The monument is only for World War I and II veterans. A fund is being started to add two smaller monuments - one to each side - to honor veterans from Korea and Vietnam. There will be no cost to the township. Any extra money that may be collected will be given to Wounded Warriors.Bids for roadwork and fuel were opened on June 26. The Dieter's Hill project was awarded to Leo Livengood for $172,857. Sealcoating went to AMS at $46,832. Fegley Oil will provide 4,000 gallons of heating oil at $2.90 per gallon.Propane, gas and diesel fuel bids are not for a set figure but may change during the year. They all went to Superior Plus.The agreement with Portland Contractors to operate the sewage plant was renewed.Under public comment Joe Ehritz asked if the court could be petitioned so the township could sell the junk on Clair Troxell's property. He also wondered if reverse mortgages could be used by people to pay their sewage hookups.Supervisor Jake Nothstein said liens have been placed on those properties but he will look into alternatives.Harvey Keiper said it is awful that people have to go to every meeting to know what is going on with Troxell. He said trucks were brought over from Bowmanstown.Supervisor Cory Smith said they had been on Duane Schleicher's property in Bowmanstown."Troxell does what he wants and gets away with it," said Keiper. When Judge David Addy suggested Troxell receive jail time, Solicitor Jim Nanovic said they didn't have to go that far, he said.Troxell also has people living in a trailer with no sewer and no water hookups. Secretary Deanna Cunfer said zoning Officer Rich Dietrich will check the trailer.Keiper said East Penn is a nice community with the worst spot in the county.
