Sprint Car season in full swing in PA

Mechanicsburg - The stage was set for the Pennsylvania Posse of sprint car drivers to battle the national touring World of Outlaws at Williams Grove Speedway.

The PA Posse, who has had a stronghold over the Outlaws whenever they have crossed the Pennsylvania border, didn't disappoint once again. It didn't look good early for the Posse drivers with Outlaw driver Jason Sides jumping out to a sizeable lead to start the 25 lap A-main. Posse driver Daryn Pittman followed with fellow Posse member "Fast" Freddy Rahmer in third.Pittman's race team is based out of nearby Northampton, which I didn't even know about until I walked into his team garage one day by accident.I was helping a friend's father take a vehicle to Pasquariello's Auto Shop in Northampton and noticed a bunch of sprint car frames and tires in the other wing of the garage. Jim Pasquariello was a friend of the family I was helping that day and an acquaintance of mine because of fishing trips he had been on with my friends family and I in Canada. Naturally, I asked him about the sprint cars that were in his garage and he told me he was the crew chief for Daryn Pittman.Pittman was arguably the hottest sprint car driver in the eastern part of the country last season and is also having a successful 2012 campaign. So far this season Pittman has two wins, 16 top 10s, and 25 top 5s in 34 starts.Sides continued to lead until lap 19 when Posse driver Greg Hodnett slid under Sides to take the lead. The battle for the first four spots was intense during that time with Hodnett coming up from sixth and Pittman and Rahmer battling back and forth with Posse driver Danny Dietrich also getting in on the action.Hodnett's lead was short-lived however, as he was having problems holding the bottom line through the tight turns at "the grove." Rahmer, who passed Sides to get into the second spot, had success on the bottom. "Fast" Freddy got underneath Hodnett in turn one, taking the lead on lap 21.Sides had something break in his car soon after Rahmer made the pass for the lead, bringing out a caution. Rahmer would get out to a nice lead after the restart and would never relinquish the top spot. Pittman, Hodnett, Dietrich, and Steve Kinser, who charged all the way to the fifth spot from 11th, rounded out the top five, making the the top four finishers all PA Posse drivers. The second night of racing saw Outlaw driver Steve Kinser winning back some bragging rights for the World of Outlaws. Kinser, whose team is owned by Sprint Cup driver Tony Stewart, earned his 39th career victory at Williams Grove and first victory at the famed track in four years. With the win Kinser earned himself a nice pay day winning $12,000 for the A-main feature and an additional $4,000 for the 12-lap Morgan Cup race. The Morgan Cup race pits five PA Posse drivers against five Outlaw drivers and the winner takes home bragging rights. Kinser also snapped a 27-race winless streak with the World of Outlaws.Hodnett, Danny Lasoski, Lance Dewease, and Craig Dollansky were the top five finishers in the A-main.In the Morgan Cup, Pittman, Justin Henderson, Dollansky and Dewease completed the top five. This week starts the Keystone Cup 410 sprint car series that will pit some of PA's best drivers at five tracks over five days. The first night of racing at Grandview Speedway was unfortunately rained out so it was onto Port Royal Speedway Thursday night to try and get the Keystone series underway. The Smokey Snellbaker Classic would kickoff the Keystone cup and it was Greg Hodnett that came away with the victory. Hodnett would come from the fourth position, holding off Lance Dewease to get the $5,000 pay day. It was Hodnett's 29th victory at Port Royal.Danny Dietrich, Alan Krimes, Blane Heimbach, Brent Marks, Daryn Pittman, Mike Wagner, Sam Hafertepe Jr, and Aaron Ott rounded out the top 10.The 410's will head to Williams Grove Friday night, Lincoln Speedway tonight, and Selinsgrove Sunday night to wrap up the Keystone Cup series.
