A brochure to culminate the Northern Lehigh Historical Markers Program will soon be revealed.

A news conference and historical marker brochure unveiling will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, at the Victory Park Historical Marker, in Victory Park, just off Main and Grove Streets in the Borough of Slatington.The brochure will wrap up the NLHMP, which began in 2006, according to Robert Stettner, a member of Northern Lehigh Future Focus.Stettner said the multicolored, gatefold-style brochure lists all the state and local historical markers in the Northern Lehigh area, which encompasses the boroughs of Slatington and Walnutport, along with Washington Township."The 38 markers listed in the brochure give a brief history of the people, places and things, which are historically significant to the region, as well as highlighting the towns comprising the area and local industries that helped the area grow and prosper," Stettner said. "Also included in the brochure are brief histories of Slatington, Walnutport and Slatedale along with a simple map of the three towns."Stettner said the brochure was designed and produced by Communication Design students at Kutztown University as part of the 2011 Design-A-Thon.Design-A-Thon is a 24-hour design and production marathon session conducted by the Communication Design Department, where students volunteer to assist nonprofit clients with pro bono design work, he said. Brochures, logos and posters and just some of the items the students design during the Design-A-Thon, Stettner said.The brochures were printed by Parkland Bindery of Allentown, he said. Funding for the project was provided equally by the three municipalities comprising the Northern Lehigh area, Slatington, Walnutport and Washington Township, who each provided $300 in funding, said Stettner, who added about 3,000 brochures were printed."Northern Lehigh Future Focus developed the NLHMP to educate local residents, preserve our region's history, and to promote our area's history to tourists," he said. "The program was a spinoff that arose out of Slatington being designated as a National Register Historic District, and the exhausting of eligible sites for state historic markers."Stettner said "the historical markers brochure will serve as an educational tool for local students, residents and visitors to the area, as it will give an all encompassing but brief look at most of the historically relevant features of the Northern Lehigh area.""The brochure was laid out in such a manner that people in cars could travel through all three Northern Lehigh municipalities in a circuitous route and visit all 38 markers," he said. "People can start out at the Slatington Borough Hall with Marker #1 and travel through Slatington, Washington Township and Walnutport and finish with #38 at The Slatington Trailhead heading back into Slatington."In the event of inclement weather, the news conference and brochure unveiling will take place in the Slatington Borough Hall Council Room, located at 125 S.
