One of the most helpful national figures supporting the Jim Thorpe plan in Mauch Chunk is Colonel Daniel F. McClaney, Chief Big Writer, adn the Continental Chief of the Continental Confederation of Adopted Indians, Springfield, Ohio. In the third letter received from him since the plan was first developed on a national scale, McClaney writes, "Changing the name of the Mauch Chunks to Jim Thorpe, Pa. will certainly put the community on the map as a city outstanding in its determination to glorify and preserve the memory of history's greatest Indian athlete, Jim Thorpe."
