Panthers sweep Tamaqua

It was a good night for area volleyball teams as Panther Valley, Pleasant Valley, Lehighton, Marian and Northwestern all posted victories on Thursday.


Panther Valley-Tamaqua

Panther Valley got the best of Tamaqua for a 25-8, 25-11, 25-18 Schuylkill League victory.

Jocelyn Stefanick had a dominating performance at the service line for Panther Valley with nine aces and 17 points. Macey Markovich added 14 service points, including three aces. Leading the way at the net were Marley Mikovich and Jessica Wiese with five kills each.

For Tamaqua, Devan Sweeney finished with six service points, four aces and three kills.

Panther Valley won the JV match, 2-0

ES North-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley continued its strong play with a commanding 25-2, 25-9, 25-10 Mountain Valley Conference victory over East Stroudsburg North.

Courtney Miller paced the Bears' attack with nine kills and eight blocks, while Mackenzie Dorney chipped in with six digs and five aces. Teammate Steph Schmitt contributed 10 assists, while Kiersten Griesback added four aces, three digs and two assists.

Pleasant Valley remains undefeated in the MVC at 7-0 and moves to 15-1 on the season.

PM East-Lehighton

Lehighton swept Pocono Mountain East, 25-16, 25-23, 25-23, in a Mountain Valley Conference match.

Dallas Seltzer had 10 kills to lead the Indians at the net. She also added four digs and three service aces. In addition to Seltzer, Lehighton got also strong matches from Taylor Yurasits (15 assists, two aces, two digs) and Tiff Thompson (four digs, three aces, two kills).

Lehighton wn the JV match, 25-12, 25-22.

Marian-Upper Dauphin

Marian remained undefeated with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-9 Schuylkill League sweep of Upper Dauphin.

Marykate Sherkness led the Fillies (8-0) with 17 kills and six aces. She also added four digs. Also playing well for Marian were Abby Stankiewitch (eight kills); Grace Boyle (four kills, four digs, three aces); Abby O'Donnell (34 assists); and Nikki Collevechio (five digs).

Northwestern-Saucon Valley

Northwestern got the best of Saucon Valley for a 25-15, 24-26, 25-18, 25-21 victory.

Jordan Veppert paced the Tigers with 17 digs and 11 kills, while Jenny Von Holt finished with 11 kills.

Mackenzie Hart chipped in with 32 assists, 16 digs and three aces. Teammates Mariana Valencia (14 digs) and Trista Cunningham (10 kills) contributed to the win.

In the JV game, Saucon Valley defeated Northwestern for a 25-19, 12-25, 15-12 win.



Stroudsburg came out on top with a 4-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Lehighton.

Gabe Beebe led the Mounties' attack with two goals while Jordan Ellison and Christian Bukowski added single scores.

The Indians' keeper Geoff Ebbert was kept busy and recorded 16 saves.

Lehighton falls to 5-6 overall and 2-6 in the MVC. Stroudsburg improves to 9-2 and 6-1.

ES South-Pleasant Valley

East Stroudsburg South scored on two of its three shots to knock off Pleasant Valley for a 2-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory.

Jake Hetner and Jaime Paquay recorded the Cavaliers' two scores,. Teammates Kubllay Kochar and Kevin Cedillo recorded the assists.

Haris Sabovic scored the Bears' lone goal in the second half.

Pleasant Valley slips to 8-3-1 overall and 5-3 in the MVC. ESS moves to 7-3 and 4-2.


No. Lehigh-Northwestern

Eight different players scored goals as Northwestern routed Northern Lehigh, 9-0, in a Colonial League game.

Rachel Fisher had a pair of goals for the Bulldogs while Angela Motolese, Sara Jones, Megan Landrigan, McKenzi Divers, Melissa Smith, Sabrina Mertz and Lydia Danner all tallied once.

Motolese and Mertz also had assists.



Stroudsburg's Brittany Thornton scored the game-winning goal with no time remaining to give her team a 1-0 overtime victory over Lehighton.

It was the second time this season that the unbeaten Mounties (10-0, 7-0) edged Lehighton in overtime.

Stroudsburg forced 10 consecutive penalty corners with time expired in the extra period. Finally on the 10th corner, Thornton scored off assists from Alyssa Jones and Taylor Parker.

Stroudsburg finished with a 16-9 advantage in shots. Lehighton goalie Kristina Schnell had 12 saves.

The Indians saw their record fall to 6-6 overall and 5-3 in the MVC.

So. Lehigh-No. Lehigh

A first half goal was all Southern Lehigh needed to post a 1-0 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Maria McDonald accounted for the Spartans' goal while Kristin Moisey recorded the assist.

Southern Lehigh held a 9-8 edge in shots. Northern Lehigh posted an 8-7 difference in penalty corners.

Nicole Horn posted eight saves in front of the NL cage and So. Lehigh keeper Katelyn Arnold recorded five saves.

Northern Lehigh falls to 7-3 in the league. Southern Lehigh remains unbeaten at 10-0.

Saucon Vy.-N'western

Erin Geiter's two goals in the first half were enough to lift Saucon Valley to a 2-0 Colonial League victory over Northwestern.

Saucon Valley outshot Northwestern 21-3 and had an 14-6 edge in penalty corners.

Laura Kotula posted 19 saves in front of the Tigers' cage.

Northwestern slips to 0-9-1 in the league.


Palmerton scored a goal in each half to come away with a 2-0 Colonial League win over Salisbury.

Morgan Mummey scored the Bombers' first goal off an assist from Stephanie Buck. Jessica Debski added the second score off an assist from Macie Hourt.

Palmerton outshot Salisbury 21-10 and held a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Bombers' keeper Devon Smith recorded five saves to record the shutout victory. Meghan Williams finished with 14 saves for Salisbury.

Palmerton improves to 4-7 overall and 4-6 in the league.

ES South-Pleasant Vy.

Abby Roselli scored in overtime to lift Pleasant Valley to a 2-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory over East Stroudsburg South.

Melissa Russo assisted on Roselli's game winner and also scored a goal for the Bears. Alex DiMarco also had an assist for Pleasant Valley (6-5-1 overall, 4-3 MVC).

Rachel Wild had three saves in goal for the Bears, who finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots.
