Schuylkill driver facing DUI count

Published September 27. 2012 05:03PM

A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) after she crashed her vehicle while allegedly texting and being under the influence.

State police at Frackville said Monica Weikel, 23, of Lavelle, was operating a 2002 Ford Escape eastbound on SR54 (Mt. Olive Blvd.), in West Mahanoy Township, about 12:55 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25. She allegedly was texting while driving, troopers said.

The Ford went off the road on the left side and struck two parked vehicles - a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country and a 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck - causing heavy front end damage to the Chrysler and Ford.

The Ford came to rest in the westbound lane blocking it. The parked vehicles are owned by John and Catherine Catizone, troopers said.

Weikel sustained a minor injury but refused medical treatment. She was found to be under the influence and was placed under arrest. She was taken to the barracks for a breath test.

The DUI charge is pending completion of the investigation, troopers added.
