A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following a two vehicle crash that occurred about 9:11 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, along SR61 in Deer Lake borough.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said William J. Sherakas, 80, of New Philadelphia, was attempting to make a left hand turn off SR895 in order to go north on 61 and failed to observe Tong V. Nguyen, 56, of Upper Darby, Delaware County, southbound on 61.

Troopers said Sherakas pulled out into the path of Nguyen. Nguyen attempted to stop but his 1994 Acura Vigor slid about 30 feet before striking the drivers' side door of Sherakas' 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora.

After impact the Aurora spun counter-clockwise and came to rest 12 feet from the point of impact.

Sherakas was freed from his vehicle by rescue personnel and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norwegian St., Pottsville, for treatment of a head laceration. Nguyen was taken to the SMC-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, for a right hand injury.

Troopers said Sherakas was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. The DUI charge is pending blood test results, troopers added.
