Robinson named first team All-State

Celeste Robinson and Aimee Oertner were both honored on Wednesday afternoon by being named to the 2011-12 Pennsylvania Girls Basketball All State team. Robinson was chosen to the Class AAA First Team and Oertner to the Class AA Second Team. Both girls improved on their All State status from last season with Robinson going from the third to the first team and Oertner from the third to the second.

Robinson's First Team selection is the icing on the cake for a remarkable career, which is arguably the best career in Jim Thorpe basketball history. Robinson spearheaded the best girls basketball squad in team history that made it to the District 11 consolation game and also led the Schuylkill League in scoring with 637 points, averaging 24.5 points per game.Robinson scored in double figures in every game in her senior season, including a season-high 36 against Panther Valley on January 20th. She is the all-time leading scorer in Jim Thorpe history with 1,691 points. Her head coach Rob Kovac, who has had two other All State players in Lacey Gonzales and Jim Thorpe assistant Trish O'Gurek when he coached at Panther Valley, mentioned the vast improvements Robinson has made over her four year career with the Lady Olympians."Making All State in back-to-back seasons is quite an honor, but to jump from the third team to the first just shows her improvement," said Kovac. "I've coached three All State players in my time so far and Celeste has improved the most out of all three from her freshman to senior year."This honor just shows the immense amount of hardwork she put in to get to this point. With her determination the sky is the limit for her whether it be in basketball, academics, or life."Aimee Oertner also capped off an amazing career with her second All State selection in as many years. The Northern Lehigh senior averaged 18.5 points per game second only to Robinson in the TIMES NEWS area and led the Lady 'Dawgs to the District 11 semis.Oertner is the all time leading scorer at Northern Lehigh along with being the career leader in blocked shots, free throws made, free throws attempted, and defensive rebounds. She has literally been the oak behind the recent Northern Lehigh girls basketball success, measuring 6-2, and has ruled the paint in the Colonial League for the past three seasons.Along with being named to the AA second team, Oertner was a first team All TIMES NEWS area selection each of the last three seasons.Oertner's father and head coach Dave Oertner mentioned how much he enjoyed coaching his daughter and that she was a special individual that a coach let a lone a father doesn't get to experience very often."She was a dream to coach, and I'm not saying that just because I'm her dad," said Oertner. "She always did what was asked of her. I've been coaching cross country and basketball here for a long time and she's one of those special kids that comes around once in a great while."
