Two teens given prison terms for Banks burglary

Two teens were sentenced to prison terms Thursday on burglary charges for entering a home in Banks Township.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Patrick Wersinger, 19, of Hazleton, and Steven A. White, 19, of Tresckow, both to 10 to 23 months in prison on the felony one charge of burglary. Each term will be followed by 18 months probation. The two admitted entering a home at 6 E. Hemlock St., on Sept. 23, 2010, and removing various items. The home is owned by Ronald Kokinda, who is chief adult probation officer for Carbon County, and was not occupied at the time. The home belongs to his parents. His father has passed away and his mother resides elsewhere.Assistant District Attorney Joseph Matika told Serfass the incident caused heartache for the family because among the family treasures taken was the Purple Heart medal earned by Kokinda's father during World War II. The medal has never been recovered. Both defense attorneys, Brian Collins for Wersinger and James Scallion for White, said their clients fully realize the hurt they caused the victim's family.Collins told Serfass in the past year that he has represented Wersinger he has impressed on him in no certain terms what he did and what the medal meant to the family.Wersinger faced Kokinda, who was seated in the courtroom, and apologized for that he did. He said, "I'm sorry for the hurt I caused your family."Scallion said White was taken by county authorities to the area where he said he threw most of the items into the woods. Some items were found, but Matika said it was mostly costume jewelry and not the medal.Serfass told both, "You recognized the severity of what you did. This is not about a medal but about what it stands for and the sacrifice made to receive it."At a plea proceeding on June 28 Wersinger said he met White in Tresckow on the day of the incident and helped him enter the Kokinda home. He claimed he was given $20 by White for helping him but didn't take anything from the home.In addition to the jail term, Serfass also ordered White to get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, attend anger management classes, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, render three hours of community service per month while under supervision, have no contact with Wersinger or the Kokinda family, and to stay away from the Kokinda home.He was also ordered to make total restitution to the insurance carrier and family of $1,932.61 representing one half of the total amount. He was given credit for 335 days spent in jail on the charge to date. Although he has served his minimum he will not be released until a pre-parole investigation is conducted to determine where he will reside.Wersinger was also ordered to get a D&A evaluation, zero tolerance on D&A use, get his General Education Diploma (GED), make restitutiion of $1,932.61, and have no contact with White or the Kokinda family, and stay away from the home.He was given credit for 253 days spent in jail on the charges. The supervision of the two men when released from jail will be done by the state parole and probation office because of Kokinda's position with the county adult probation office.
