September 11, 2001 was remembered in unique style at two local churches yesterday.

"Homeland" was the title of a musical program staged at Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, Summit Hill, and St. Peter's Lutheran and UCC Church, West Penn Township.The program consisted of a combined, 32 member choir from several churches, including the two host churches.Under the direction of David Perkins, music director at Christ Presbyterian Church, the chorus sang a number of patriotic and Americana selections.About 100 people attended the Summit Hill service.The program opened with the choir leading the audience in the singing of the National Anthem.The song penned by Woody Guthrie in 1940, "This Land is Your Land," set the tone for the rest of the program.There were numerous highlights in the program.A special military tribute consisted of a medley of military anthems. Veterans and family members of the respective armed forces units were asked to stand, and then applauded, during each segment.During one selection, a male quartet was highlight. It consisted of Marc Gardiner, David Hiles, Leon Morgans, and Marissa Yeager.Soloist Dru Laughman was featured during another number.The trained voice of Perkins was displayed during one selection.Crowd favorites included the selections "Lean on Me," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and "We shall Overcome."During each song, videos were displayed on two flat-screen TVs mounted on the wall.Interspersed between the musical numbers was dialogue about our "Homeland," portraying it as the place for which our ancestors fought, and a land "uniquely blessed of God."
