Winged tenants choose an unusual home

When Karen Bandzi of Walnutport went out on her deck to use the grill early last month, she found the beginnings of a large bird nest. Her husband Simon said, "Let them go and see what happens." The large stalks of weeds used to build the nest had to be worked to fit through the three-inch holes on the ends of the grill. In a day-and-a-half the nest completely filled the grill. Five eggs were laid and on May 9 five babies were born. Two birds come and go feeding the baby starlings. The Bandzis can open the grill and watch the rapid growth of the babies. The parents come back as soon as the people leave. One of the parents sits on the deck rail with food in its mouth waiting for it to be safe to return.
