The second consecutive public meeting of the Schuylkill County Commissioners will be on the road again as they will journey to Hometown, Rush Township, to hold their business meeting at the township's municipal building next Wednesday at 10 a.m.

At the meeting the commissioners will present the township supervisors with a check for $204,000 for use in the project entitled, "Hometown Area Safe Routes To School." Last week the board met at North Schuylkill High School.The transportation enhancement project has been selected for funding by the North East Pennsylvania Alliance (NEPA) and PennDOT is administering the program. Federal monies in the amount of $204,000 have been secured through the program and the remaining $36,000 is matched by the township.According to Stephen W. Simchak, chairman of the board of supervisors, this project is for improvement to create safe routes to the Rush Township Elementary by upgrading sidewalks and paths to connect the school on Mahanoy Avenue.The streets to receive the proposed improvements are Meadow Avenue, Oak Lane and Lincoln Drive. The improvements will include many items such as improving existing sidewalks, installing proposed sidewalks, curbing, crosswalks, detectible warning systems, signage, bike racks, shoulder widening and surface painting.The path is Phase 1 of a multi-phased plan to connect the two river corridors and trial system for Carbon and Schuylkill County.
